The incident took place around 9:13 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 13, when Westport officers responded to the area of 333 Post Road for a report of a car crash with injuries, said Westport Police Lt. Anthony Prezioso.
Once on the scene, police and first responders found that the man had been struck while working on the on-going construction project consisting of the re-paving of Post Road West and a stretch of Post Road East, Prezioso added.
Prezioso said the victim sustained serious injuries and was transported to Norwalk Hospital for treatment.
Members of the department's detective bureau and accident investigation team responded to the scene to conduct an investigation into the incident.
Representatives from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) also responded and are conducting an inquiry into the matter.
The incident closed the roadway for hours, finally reopening around 4:30 a.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
The driver who allegedly hit the construction worker remained on the scene and is cooperating fully with the investigation, Prezioso said.
No charges have been made to-date as the investigation continues.
